English

Language Arts

While coursework varies from grade to grade, students are exposed to a variety of literature forms, including plays, novels, short stories, and poetry. Teachers expect students to write paragraphs and essays, focusing on the tasks on the Common Core exams (middle school) or the Common Core Regents (high school). Additional writing projects are assigned throughout the year, including a large research paper.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Michelle re-teaches students how to read, discusses students’ relationship with reading and text, and suggests ways to engage, focus, and enjoy the written word. Using similar strategies, she offers students strategies to write paragraphs and written responses that they can use in any class that requires reading and writing.

HIGH SCHOOL

Most students lose their interest in reading when it is forced upon them or they feel inferior because they don’t understand what they have been assigned or why. Michelle uses the Habits of Good Readers to bring relevance and rigor, as well as pleasure, back to reading. In addition, she has tools and strategies for crafting well-organized paragraphs, essays, and papers. Michelle can also teach grammar to even the most unwilling students.

BOOK CLUB

Parents and students who want to read on a regular basis and have discussions about books can use Michelle to facilitate monthly meetings. Students will find ways to increase reading stamina, engage with the characters, and improve their reading ability in a non-academic environment. Create your own group or see what Michelle is currently offering.

COLLEGE READINESS

For students not feeling ready for Freshman English, Michelle can review strategies for organizing ideas into essays and reports, remind students how to incorporate evidence to prove a thesis, add analysis into conclusions, and review grammar rules.

Students don't need a perfect teacher

They need a teacher who gets them excited about reading, writing, and thinking.
A teacher who smiles and makes them enjoy learning–each and every day.
