PSAT/SAT/ACT

If you teach a student how to take an exam, then they will be good at taking exams. Is that a lifelong skill?
PSAT/SAT/ACT test prep is similar for the PSAT, SAT, and the ACT (Reading and Writing sections). Michelle takes studying a step further by training students to be better readers, writers, and thinkers.

motivation

When studying for a high-stakes exam, students will be trained like marathon runners. There will be no cramming, no quick fixes. Michelle will work on mindset and lifelong academic skills, along with test-taking strategies and specific hacks to build student confidence.

test change

The PSAT/SAT is now digital. Stay tuned for other testing changes which may be in the works. Not sure which test is for you? Michelle can help.

STAMINA

It is essential that students can sit and read for at least an hour while taking any standardized test, including the SAT. Students must begin developing stamina to read difficult texts. Michelle trains students to read in an engaging way, leading to more content retention and less boredom!

CHOOSE PRIVATE

Parents and students often choose private SAT tutoring instead of a class or workshop because of the individual attention. Most classes do not offer repeated practice of different strategies, nor do they differentiate learning for students who are not good at “chalk and talk” teaching methods or learning alone from a computer program. Tutors who claim they are competent in both the ELA and math sections usually rely on a computer program to teach, which does not provide social emotional support.

CONFIDENCE BUILDING

Students cannot control what will happen on test day. By modeling positive self talk, Michelle boosts student confidence and provides tools for students to put into their test-taking toolbox. She focuses on multiple-choice test-taking strategies, answer analysis, annotation strategies, critical thinking around questions, and guessing skills.

READING WITH A PURPOSE

Students will re-learn how to read using eight habits of good readers. This means students will learn how to engage more deeply and focus for a longer period of time while reading. Michelle encourages students to use these habits for their schoolwork, not just the exam, and will continue to work on reading skills no matter learning disabilities or interest level the student has. Students will gain tools for how to study vocabulary effectively and understand unfamiliar words in context.

GRAMMAR GENIUS IN TRAINING

Most students don’t know where a comma goes, let alone an em-dash or a semicolon. Michelle engages students with tips and tricks to better understand how to eliminate wrong answers, how to correct their writing, and to never forget when an Oxford comma is used.

WRITING MADE EASY

Students will learn how to order ideas logically using transition words and evidence. They will consider how ideas are referenced using pronouns, dependent clauses, and parallel comparisons. Michelle teaches students how to learn how to write better by using the questions on the exam to understand what well-organized writing looks like.

Students don't need a perfect teacher

They need a teacher who gets them excited about reading, writing, and thinking.
A teacher who smiles and makes them enjoy learning–each and every day.
